Other 9/11-Related Cancers & Medical Conditions

While the World Trade Center Health Program and compensation under the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund provide a comprehensive list of cancers that are considered related to the 9/11 exposure at Ground Zero (and also the entire lower Manhattan south of Canal Street and any area where the debris was handled), certain of these cancers are being diagnosed with greater frequency then others.

There has been a large increase in cancers involving the digestive tract. For example, the WTCHP has certified as 9/11-related throat cancer/cancer of the oropharynx (the middle part of the throat) in at least 143 individuals exposed to the 9/11 toxins. With the direct ingestion of the 9/11 dust, there similarly have been a large increase in individuals with cancer of the lip, tongue, salivary gland, floor of mouth, gum and other mouth, tonsil, hypopharynx, and other oral cavity, and pharynx. Further along the digestive tract, there have been at least 55 individuals who were exposed to the 9/11 dust and debris who the WTCHP has certified as having cancer related to 9/11. The WTCHP has also certified approximately another 68 people with rectal cancer (cancer of the rectum), finding these cancers are related to exposure to the 9/11 dust and fumes.
